What is the Willow Tree Nativity Set?
I found this last year and am so pleased that it is still on sale as it has to be the best nativity set I have ever seen. I’ve always been one to get excited by Christmas and love the story of the nativity, and have brought up my two little girls to respect the tale of Joseph, Mary and Jesus. It’s a beautiful story, and it’s wonderfully illustrated by this great nativity set. It has made the ideal Christmas gift for me and my children as it stays true to what Christmas is really all about.

The girls loved it when I gave it to them and I watched with delight as their faces lit up on carefully unwrapping every piece. The great thing is that the carving is so delicate and pretty and the colours so right that it makes a wonderful centrepiece for a Christmas display. I let the girls decide where it was going to go and how they would lay it out – but it never stayed in one place for long! They carefully treasure the pieces and arrange them over and over again, and it’s a joy to watch.
What is in the set?
This is what I really love about it – you get three wonderful figures representing Joseph, Mary and a shepherd, and while Mary tenderly cradles the baby Jesus the shepherd is lovingly holding a lamb – how cute is that? What makes it all the better is that you get three further figures – a beautiful donkey and two wonderful sheep – and put together they make an absolutely unmistakeable scene. My girls like to add the odd farm animal from their sets, and some straw for effect, and have endless fun changing the scene and adding things to it. They built a stable from a cardboard box last year – I think we still have it!
These are really beautifully made figures by an artist called Susan Lordi who is an accomplished sculptor, and they really are miniature works of art worth treasuring forever. From the wonderfully tender way Mary cradles Jesus to the evocative staff by Joseph’s side the whole scene is stunningly recreated.
Each of these figures is hand painted – and beautifully done too – making them not just pieces in a nativity set but true collector’s pieces that will never lose their value.

It’s hard to say what I love best about the Willow Tree Nativity Set but as I’m a lover of art the beautiful craftsmanship appealed to me straight away. Mind you, what you see in the pictures looks lovely, but when you actually hold these pieces in your hands they are simply beautiful to behold.
What I really love is watching the girls’ faces as they bring them out of their box and unwrap them – the first time was magical, and I’m looking forward to seeing those emotions this year too. It’s like watching the whole meaning of Christmas unfolding before your very eyes, and then – when you lay the set out in its chosen spot – it brings a sense of joy and happiness to everyone who sees it. That’s how beautiful the Willow Tree Nativity set really is.
